Home Inspection Warning Signs

While it is always a good idea to accompany your home inspector when he does the inspection, there are signs that you, too should look out for when buying a home.

The Heating and Cooling Units
 
  1. Lack of service history
  2. An abundance of repair stickers indicating multiple service calls
   
The Plumbing and Electrical Systems
 
  1. Bathtubs and sinks which don't drain well
  2. Extra long extension cords in use
  3. Appliances which don't function properly
   
The Roof
 
  1. Stained or sagging ceilings
  2. Missing or cracked shingles/roof tiles
  3. Peeling plaster
  4. Double or triple layers
   
The Exterior
 
  1. Cracks in the foundation
  2. Standing water from improper drainage
  3. Warped doors, sloping floors
  4. Warped window seals (if wood) indicate moisture problems
   
The Interior
 
  1. Mold or mildew smells
  2. Doors that don't lock properly (indicate warping)
  3. Stained ceilings (or paint that doesn't completely match indicates a leak)
  4. Check all windows to make sure they work properly
